of the World

Introduction

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be able to travel anywhere in the world? Your agency is sending you to look into establishing a resort at one of the most exotic locations on the planet!

Task

You will be asked to create and present a PowerPoint presentation about one of the world’s great lakes.

Process

Step 1. Choose one of the following lakes for your project:

Caspian Sea

Aral Sea

Lake Victoria

Lake Tanganyika

Lake Chad

Lake Superior

Lake Huron

Lake Michigan

Lake Maracaibo

Lake Titicaca

Step 2. Go to these links to find out as much as you can about your selection.

Step 3. Create a PowerPoint presentation made up of the following:(click here for demo)

A. At least ten slides with these required:

1.A title slide naming the lake you have chosen; your name; and your teacher’s name.

2.A picture of the lake.

3.A slide describing its location.

4.A slide listing the latitude and longitude of the lake.

5.A map slide showing its location in the world.

6.A map slide showing its location within its country.

7.A slide of an outline map of the lake itself (if available).

8.The lake’s ranking in size.

9.Other necessary information.

10.Based on your research develop a summary slide explaining your reasons for locating a resort at this site.

11.Sources used.

B. Presentation

1.Has automatic slide transition.

Conclusion

Now that you have completed this project, you should have become an expert on locating places by longitude and latitude and in making multi-media presentations! Keep sharp in these skills because you will be asked to demonstrate them again later this school year.

Teacher Notes

The Great Lakes of the World project was created for fifth grade students and may be completed in four class periods. Prior knowledge in longitude and latitude is beneficial. Prior knowledge of PowerPoint is also beneficial.

The student activities described in this project address C.O.R.E. Knowledge content area History and Geography: Grade 5 I. World Geography B. Great Lakes of the World as well as Illinois State Learning Standards 5A2b; 5B2a;and 17A2b.

Students will also create and display a poster promoting their site during art class.

This lesson was created for individual use in our computer lab but could be utilized for traditional WebQuest group work.
