Introduction

 

 

 

 

Last year a fifth grader at a nearby school lost 25 pounds in one month. She was diagnosed with Type II diabetes.

Diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke in adults. About 16 million Americans have diabetes. There is no cure. Many people are unaware that they have diabetes until they develop one of its complications.

  • Create a folder labeled DIABETES for recording information to be used. (Place a folder in your student file on the network.)
  • Search for answers to the questions using the websites in Resources. Record notes that answer the questions asked.
  • Arrange notes for use in developing an 8-page booklet. Booklet
  • Design a cover that includes a title, your name and grade. Complete the remaining pages of the booklet.

Diabetes is a life-changing disease, but people with diabetes can lead a normal, healthy life. By recognizing the symptoms, diabetics can receive treatment early. Because of heredity, family members need to be informed. Your information booklet should be shared with family members.
