Introduction

Welcome aboard mates. Imagine what it would be like to sail the oceans.  You and your shipmates will be sailing the ocean of your choice, discovering the continents around it and some of the animals and plants in the sea. 

Task

 

 

  You and two other sailors will choose the ocean you wish to travel.

 Name the continents around the ocean

 Find pictures of the ocean

 Find pictures of three different animals living in the water

 Give three facts about each of the animals

 Fine and list three plants that grow in this ocean

 List three facts about each of the plants

    Choose your two shipmates that you wish to sail the ocean with.

   You and your shipmates will choose which ocean that you want to sail and name the continents that are close to it.  Click here (11.A.1d)

    Find pictures of the ocean you are sailing. Click here  (12.B.1a)

    Find pictures and facts of three different animals that will live in the ocean and give three facts about each of them. Click here  (11.A.1d; 12.B.1a; 12.A.2a; 12.B.2b; 1.A.1a; 1.B.1c; 1.C.1e)

    After you have completed your adventure write a short story listing all of the information that you have discovered.  Included in you story should be pictures of some of the sea creatures and plants that you have discovered.  (13A.1c; 3.A.1; 3.B.1a; 3.B.1b)

Conclusion

        

Ahoy mates! Are you ready to get rid of your sea legs and stay on land for a while?  During your sea travels you have had many adventures exploring sea creatures and plants.  Maybe even found a hidden treasure or two.    While you discovered how important the sea animals and all of the plants are to ecosystem.

Teacher Notes

The students will be in groups of three.  They will be instructed to use the web sites given and will be monitored closely as the project is done.  After the students have finished their research they will then do a report in word so that they will be able to insert the pictures they have found.  Once they have completed their reports they will then turn in their final project for evaluation.

 

Language Arts

 

1.A.1a:  Apply word analysis skills (e.g., phonics, word patterns) to recognize new words.

 

1.B.1c:  Continuously check and clarify for understanding (e.g., reread, read ahead, use visual and context clues, ask questions, retell, using meaningful substitutions).

 

1.C.1e:  Identify how authors and illustrators express their ideas in text and graphics (e.g., dialogue, conflict, shape, color characters).

 

3.A.1:  Construct complete sentences which demonstrate subject/verb agreement; appropriate capitalization and punctuation; correct spelling of appropriate, high-frequency words; and appropriate use of the eight parts of speech.

 

3.B.1a:  Use prewriting strategies to generate and organize ideas (e.g., focus on one topic; organize writing to include a beginning, middle and end; use descriptive words when writing about people, places, things, events.)
