Process

  1. Search the following image sites to become comfortable searching for images.  Images can be digital pictures, graphics, clipart, text, or animation.
    1. Animation Factory
    2. Microsoft’s Online Clip Gallery
    3. Pics 4 Learning
  2. Using the sites that you explored in #1, find a picture that you would like to use in this activity.
  3. Save the picture to your computer:
    1. Using Internet Explorer – Right-click on the picture and choose Save Picture As.  Then, browse to the desired folder (double check the filename & change if necessary), and Save.
    2. Using Netscape – Right-click on the picture and choose Save Image As.  Then, browse to the desired folder (double check the filename & change if necessary), and Save.
  4. Open Microsoft Word.
  5. Place the picture in your document by:
    1. Placing the cursor exactly where you want the picture to be.
    2. Choose Insert\Picture\From File.
    3. Browse to the desired folder where the file was saved.
    4. Click on it to select it and click Insert.
  6. Click on the picture once to select it.  The Picture Toolbar should appear…

Using the functions of the Picture toolbar, adjust the pictures settings to your desired choices.  (Hint:  It is suggested to always change the wrapping of a picture to Tight – button with dog - for easier maneuvering on the document.)

7.     In the top right corner of the document, type your first and last name.  Choose File\Save As and save the document as Web Image.  Print one copy and turn in for credit.

  1. Pat yourself on the back… you just successfully transferred an image from the web to your document!

Conclusion

Well, after surfing the web for pictures, you should have gained a better understanding of the online picture resources and how to use them in your documents.  Here are a few things to remember:

  • There are many sites that have pictures that you would like to use.  However, if they are not copyright-free then you are not supposed to use them.  Help your students with this as well!
  • Understanding file management is key.  Saving the file isn’t nearly as difficult as finding it two minutes later.
  • Animated images can also be saved exactly the same way as still images, but remember, animation can only be viewed in a web browser.  So, the animation may not show up while you are editing your web page, but will show up when you preview it.
  • Practice, practice, practice!  The more you practice this, the better you will become!
