Introduction

Hello there! I’m Mona the Monarch butterfly. It was so cool getting to this part of my life. Would you like to know how I got here? Well, that’s for me to know and for you to find out! Follow me and I’ll help you out.

Task

Here’s what you’ll have to do in order to learn more about me, and my life. You and a partner will work together to find out just what it is like to live like me, Mona the Butterfly. We’ll start at the very beginning and in the end you’ll find out just how I came to be. You will be responsible for coloring pages showing the stages of my life and for creating a book all about me.  You will also need to write about YOUR life as a caterpillar and butterfly in your journal.

Process

You will need to choose a partner to work with.  Your teacher will help you.

You and your partner will read the book A Butterfly is Born by Jean Pierre Vanden Eeckhoudt.

Click on the butterfly. Look at the stages of life that a butterfly goes through.

Discuss the different stages of the butterfly’s life with your partner.

Click on the butterfly and color the butterfly by clicking the colors and pointing to the part of the butterfly you wish to color.

Now use clean white paper to make a booklet showing the life cycle of the butterfly.

Be sure to be neat and accurate.

Evaluation

Click on the caterpillar to see what you must do with your Life Cycle of the Butterfly book.

Conclusion

As you complete this WebQuest and your booklets think about the life cycle of the butterfly. In your journal pretend that you are a caterpillar.  Write about your life as you grow into a butterfly like Mona.  Do you think that you would like to be like Mona? What do you think would be the best thing about being a butterfly? What would be the worst thing?

Teacher Notes

This WebQuest is for young students and will require assistance from a teacher. I would suggest reading and discussing butterflies and caterpillars prior to doing this WebQuest. There are many sites on the internet that contain an incredible amount of information. Finding sites that are accessible and user friendly to first graders is more difficult. Here are some that I found:

Butterfly Anatomy

Lesson Plans

Scholastic-Life cycle of the Butterfly

Life Cycle

Please keep in mind that these were active sites about butterflies when this Webquest was submitted. I am not responsible for any new information that may have been posted to these sites.
